Until June 13 Visual Art Center of Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University

“A Decade of Contemporary American Printmaking: 1999-2009″ is an unprecedented exhibition in Beijing of art works that display the diversity of the print medium by internationally renowned artists. Columbia University’s LeRoy Neiman Print Center collection includes signature examples of works by established artists including William Kentridge’s masterful animation-still drawings, Kara Walker’s silhouette reproductions of Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War, an ephemeral moon series by Kiki Smith, and other engaging works by Terry Winters, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tomas Vu, Sarah Sze, and more. The exhibition opens at Tsinghua Unviersity’s Academy of Art and Design on May 29 in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI). On July 4, the exhibition premieres at the Today Art Museum as part of the center’s “International Printmaking Exhibition” (July 4-26), alongside works by established Chinese artists (and leading printmakers) including Xu Bing, Su Xinping and Fang Lijun. The varying examples of printmaking techniques in the Collection, integrating elements of sculpture, collage, photography and drawing, provide contrast to the print tradition honed by internationally recognized Chinese contemporary artists. The simultaneous display of printmaking works from celebrated Chinese and Western artists marks a watershed moment for generating dialogue among the contemporary Beijing art community. For both exhibitions, the collaboration between the Neiman Print Center and Tsinghua University Academy of Design and the Today Art Museum reflects the sincere commitment to share in a creative exchange of ideas and to create an exceptional experience in the making and thinking of prints. Artists include: Gregory Amenoff, Polly Apfelbaum, Klaus Bürgel, Ernesto Caivano, Mark Dion, Eric Fischl, Lee Friedlander, Carl Fudge, Barnaby Furnas, Ellen Gallagher, Yun-Fei Ji, William Kentridge, Robert Lazzarini, LeRoy Neiman, Dana Schutz, Dasha Shishkin, Shahzia Sikander, Kiki Smith, Sarah Sze, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tomas Vu, Kara Walker, Paula Wilson, Terry Winters/Ben Marcus, Jennifer Nuss, Fred Liang, Jomar Statkun, Megan Foster, Su Zhou, Lei Meng, Suzanne Li Puma, Phong Bui, Luis Silva. The Beijing exhibition is co-organized by RedBox Studio and accompanied by a 176pp full color catalogue.
