How to (re)frame the "artist" in Chinese contemporary?

MadeIn, "Love in fact results from an excess of dopamine in the brain" 2009 (currently on exhibition at ShanghART Beijing)
Currently up in Beijing are two new exhibitions that seem to reflect new strategies in conceiving of “Chinese contemporary” art as a whole, and the role of individual artists within it. At Platform China is “Jungle,” an exhibition curated with an experimental, open structure, which aims to be an evolving survey of contemporary trends in Chinese art. At ShanghART Beijing is “Spread,” a more traditional mini-retrospective of MadeIn, the art “company” founded by acclaimed conceptualist Xu Zhen in 2009. Also connected are recent attempts to present either a “comprehensive view” of the art scene (such as the proliferation of database initiatives), or select visions of a contemporary canon (such as UCCA's “Breaking Forecast” exhibition this past winter). As explored in depth in Pauline J. Yao's award-winning 2008 essay “In Production Mode,” it's standard practice for Chinese artists to use outside labor in the fabrication of art pieces – in fact, she argues, this ability has been a precondition for the epic scale of “Chinese contemporary art” as we know it. This tendency lays the groundwork for new notions of the artist as ultimate author of their works – while the rabid art market and the power of art collectors to assign value to artists has reshaped concepts of curation.
Perhaps projects like Platform's “Jungle,” and MadeIn's ongoing experiments, point a new direction in which artists and curators are directly offering responses, both theoretical and practical, to these conditions – and marking a new phase in contemporary Chinese art in the process.
